Coming to Google Play. When Host-Caster arrives on Google Play, it can update this download in place: no reinstall, and your stations and settings stay.

How to install it

  1. Download it on your phone. Tap Download for Android. If Chrome says the file might be harmful, tap Download anyway.
  2. Open the file. Tap Open in the File downloaded message, or open it later from the Downloads folder in your Files app.
  3. Allow installs from that app, once. The first time, Android says it is not allowed to install unknown apps from this source: tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, go back and tap the file again.
  4. Tap Install. Google Play Protect may say App scan recommended because the app is not on the Play Store yet: tap Scan app to have Google check it first, or More details, then Install without scanning.
  5. Open Host-Caster and sign in. Use the same account as on the web.

Updates: when a new version is out, the app shows A new version is ready and opens the download in your browser. Install it over the app the same way (Android asks Do you want to update this app?): your data stays.

What each permission is for

  • MicrophoneOnly while you call in to your hosts. Asked the first time you tap the mic.
  • NotificationsThe playback notification with play, pause and next, and the lock screen controls. No marketing messages.
  • Background playbackKeeps your station playing with the screen off or in another app.
  • Notification accessOptional, only for Any music app mode: to see which song your other music app is playing and pause it around host breaks. It never reads what your notifications say.
  • Internet and keep awakeTo reach your account, your music and AI services, and to keep playing while the phone sleeps.

It does not ask for your contacts, location, camera or files, and it cannot install anything by itself. Details in the Privacy Policy.

Check the download (optional)

The SHA-256 above should match what your computer prints for the file:

sha256sum host-caster-0.1.0.apk # Linux
shasum -a 256 host-caster-0.1.0.apk # Mac
certutil -hashfile host-caster-0.1.0.apk SHA256 # Windows

Every Host-Caster release for Android, here and on Google Play, is signed with the same certificate. Its SHA-256 fingerprint:

Android there now asks for extra steps before installing apps from outside the app stores when their developer is not verified with Google yet. If your phone shows that, the web app works in Chrome right away, and the Google Play version is coming.

iPhone and iPad

Add it to your Home Screen

The App Store version is coming. Today, add the web app to your Home Screen: it opens full screen from its own icon, like an app.

  1. Open Safari and go to app.host-caster.com.
  2. Tap Share (the square with an arrow pointing up) at the bottom of the screen (at the top on iPad).
  3. Tap Add to Home Screen. You may need to scroll down the list. If you see Open as Web App, leave it on.
  4. Tap Add. The Host-Caster icon appears on your Home Screen.
  5. Open it from the icon and sign in. The Home Screen app keeps its own sign-in, separate from Safari, so sign in once more there.

Chrome and Edge on iPhone and iPad can add it too, from their Share menu.

What is different from an app store app

  • Keep it open while you listen. iPhone can pause web apps when you lock the screen or switch apps, so the next song or host break waits until you come back. The App Store version will keep playing in the background.
  • Any music app mode needs Android. On iPhone, your hosts talk between songs from the sources inside Host-Caster.
  • Songs you upload stay on this device, in the app's own storage. Keep a backup in Settings, Data and storage.
  • Everything else is the same: your account, plans, hosts, stations, call in and sync.
